Suspect arrested after security officer is shot on Halloween Night at North Star Mall
SAN ANTONIO TX November 5, 2023 – Authorities have arrested a suspect involved in the shooting of a loss prevention agent on Halloween night at North Star Mall.
San Antonio Police arrested Eduardo Sanchez Jr., 52, around 1:30 a.m. Friday and charged him with three counts of aggravated robbery.
The incident happened around 8 p.m. at Macy’s Department Store when two security officers saw Sanchez and two other suspects grabbing large amounts of clothing off the shelves. Sanchez and a female suspect walked by all the registers and were walking toward the exit doors.
One security officer was positioned outside the door, and another was inside the store. The security agent inside the store tried to stop the two suspects, but the female immediately took off running out the door into the parking lot.
The two security officers tried to take Sanchez into custody, but a struggle ensued. This caught the attention of a third security officer, who came to help. At some point, Sanchez pulled a gun from his pocket and fired it at the third security officer, hitting her in the thigh.
All three security officers backed away from Sanchez, who took off into the parking lot. The other security guards pulled the injured victim back into the store. The injured security officer hid inside a storage room after the shooting. Emergency Medical Services had to go inside to get her out.
Witnesses said Sanchez had thrown a jacket into a car after he fled the store and it was seized by police. During their initial investigation, they saw a jacket that Sanchez was seen wearing while in the store and a magazine for a semi-automatic handgun in plain view inside the vehicle.
A check on the vehicle’s owner turned up Sanchez, who was later matched to the shooter on the surveillance video. Witnesses also positively identified Sanchez during the lineup.
Sanchez was being held in the Bexar County Jail on a combined bond of $300,000.
