Suspect shot by the off-duty officer he was trying to carjack was out on bail for additional charges… of carjacking
CHICAGO, IL October 29 2022– Kendrick Anderson was shot in the leg as he and several others attempted to rob a Chicago-area woman and steal her SUV. Turns out, this wasn’t his first adventure in carjacking.
Unfortunately for Anderson, it turns out that woman happened to be an off-duty Chicago police officer.
Just after 6 pm on Thursday, October 22nd, she was organizing some paperwork outside her SUV when Anderson and two others approached her from behind and cornered her in.
According to CWB Chicago, one of the other men with Anderson pointed a gun at her chest while he patted her down.
“Anderson tried to enter the driver’s seat of the woman’s SUV, and one of the other offenders took her purse, prosecutors said.”
The officer was eventually able to distance herself from the three men, drawing her weapon, she opened fire. Anderson was struck in the leg. All three fled the scene, with one firing at the officer as they ran.
Authorities say that Anderson was dropped off by his accomplices at Trinity Hospital and then they sped away. A security guard was able to take a photo of the vehicle before it left the hospital.
Turns out, that car was also stolen. Police were able to track it, finding two juvenile males with the vehicle, one was 15, the other 16. They found items belonging to the officer in that car.
They are both facing stolen motor vehicle charges, but were not charged with the attempting carjacking, because they were wearing different clothing than the two men at the scene.
CPD says that the wounded 18-year-old man was out on bail stemming from previous incidents involving thefts and stolen cars.
In August, police were sitting on a hijacked car when Anderson got behind the wheel with four other passengers. They attempted to pull him over, but he backed down the street, striking several other vehicles along the way.
He was arrested and charged with possessing a stolen motor vehicle, driving while never having been issued a license, and criminal damage to government property. He posted $9,000 bail and as released.
Then, in September, Anderson was again charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass to a vehicle. He was released about six hours later on a personal recognizance bond.
When police arrived at the hospital, he was wearing only one boot, but it matched a boot found at the scene of the attempted car heist.
Anderson’s fingerprints were also on the officer’s SUV.
He is now facing a charge of attempted vehicular hijacking while armed with a firearm.
According to CWB, Judge Barbara Dawkins ordered Anderson to be held without bail for violating the terms of his previous bond agreements.
For this latest incident, the judge set his bail at $7 million, which will require him to post $700,000 to get out of jail.
Dawkins was prohibited by state law from holding Anderson without bail for the hijacking allegations because “he was still hospitalized on Saturday and did not attend the hearing in person.”
