Suspect used pulley system in $30K copper theft at Esplanade Mall
Kenner La.
A man has been arrested in connection with what police describe as a large-scale copper theft operation at Esplanade Mall.
According to the Kenner Police Department, the investigation began on March 27 when a security officer found an exterior door open at the mall’s Macy’s building.
Officers who responded discovered an elaborate setup designed to pull copper wiring from the walls, including a pulley system powered by a car battery.
Investigators say about 200 feet of copper wire had already been removed, cut, and staged for pickup, with an estimated value between $25,000 and $30,000.
Using Flock Safety cameras, detectives identified a truck registered to Jason Chapman in the area around the time of the incident. The vehicle was later spotted carrying copper along Airline Highway, according to police.
Authorities say Chapman returned to the area on April 1, where investigators believe he was attempting to pick up more copper.
A warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of simple burglary and simple criminal damage to property.
Detectives later executed a search warrant at a home in Destrehan, where Chapman was taken into custody. Inside, officers say they recovered roughly 1,000 pounds of copper wire, along with scrapyard receipts.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and believe Chapman could be connected to other copper thefts in the region.
“This wasn’t just theft, this was a full-scale operation,” Kenner Police Chief Conley said. “Unfortunately for him, our officers are just as committed to their work and a lot better at it.”
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation, and additional charges are expected.
