Suspect who assaulted Colorado security officer also a suspect in a recent death
Longmont CO Dec 1 2020 Longmont police early Friday arrested a man identified as the person of interest in the death of 71-year-old Randall Schubert, who was assaulted and robbed Nov. 5.
Edward Herbert Hoid, 36, was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. Friday after officers were dispatched to The Village at the Peaks, 1250 South Hover St., on reports of a man, later determined to be Hoid, throwing rocks at businesses. Numerous businesses and vehicles in the area were broken into, according to the arrest affidavit.
Hoid began running from officers but complied to the arrest when officers told him to stop, the affidavit states. He was taken into custody at 1:16 a.m.
According to the affidavit, a security guard had just started his rounds when he heard noises coming from the parking lot next to a cellphone story. He approached Hoid and told him the mall was closed and he needed to leave.
“You are lucky you are not the police. Do you want to get shot?” Hoid told the security guard, the affidavit said, and Hoid then reached into his pocket, where the security guard saw a bulge.
Hoid followed the guard as he walked to the security office and blocked the door as the guard tried to enter. The guard eventually entered and shut the door, and Hoid started throwing two chairs at the window of the office. The guard called 911 and Hoid walked away.
Following Hoid’s arrest, officers determined Hoid tried to break into the guard’s vehicle by hitting a medical kit against the driver’s window, the affidavit said.
Hoid was arrested on suspicion of felony menacing, three counts of first-degree trespassing, criminal mischief, theft and parole violation.
While Hoid has been named a person of interest in a death, but he has not been charged in connection to it.
“Mr. Schubert’s death is still a very active and serious investigation, and we are working closely with the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office,” a news release from Longmont police stated.
Schubert was knocked off his bike about 5 p.m. on the greenway south 355 Ken Pratt Blvd. north of the Longmont Recreation Center. He died from his injuries Nov. 16.
“We’re a 24-hour business. Last night our officers, even though it was a holiday, were in working and made a really good arrest,” Longmont Deputy Chief Jeff Satur said Friday.
Officers will continue to follow leads until the death investigation is resolved. Anyone with information is asked to call Longmont dispatch at 303-651-8501 or contact Det. Jon High at 303-651-8584.
