Suspected gunman at Intel campus arrested
Hillsborough OR October 24 2019
A Washington County man is behind bars after police say he whipped out a gun and pointed it at a woman he didn’t know inside a parking garage near the Ronler Acres Intel campus Tuesday morning.
The confrontation set off messages alerting Intel employees to the possible presence of a gunman in the area. Hours later, police arrested the suspect, Jason Rossman, 48, as he was driving around Hillsboro.
Rossman, a Banks resident, was booked in the Washington County Jail on suspicion of unlawful use of weapon, menacing, and unlawful possession of cocaine, said Sgt. Eric Bunday, a Hillsboro police spokesman.
According to police, the woman, an Intel employee, had pulled into the parking garage around 6:40 a.m. Rossman, driving a black Acura TL, pulled up next to her.
When she got out of her car, the Acura driver, who was wearing shorts and a vest, said some “odd things” to her and showed her what looked like a black pistol, Bunday said. The woman ran inside, and he drove away.
The pair did not know one another, Bunday said. It is not clear what Rossman, who does not work at Intel, was doing in the area.
At about 7 a.m., Intel employees received a message alerting them to a gunman’s presence on the campus and to the police response. “Take action to ensure your safety,” the message read.
Later that morning, Intel sent out another message to employees, notifying them that the Ronler Acres campus had been cleared to return to normal operations.
“While this type of event is extremely rare, Intel is not immune,” the message read.
Intel offered employees access to consultants in its employee assistance program and warned them to report suspicious behavior to security.
Hillsboro police pulled over Rossman around 12:20 p.m. as he was driving along Northeast Sixth Avenue near East Main Street, Bunday said.
The suspect still had a gun with him, according to police.
