Syracuse Police expand partnership with Destiny USA ahead of holiday season
SYRACUSE, N.Y. Nov 8 2023 The holiday season is steadily approaching and the Syracuse Police Department said it is expanding its partnership with Destiny USA to ensure the safety of mall visitors.
The Syracuse Police Department said its bicycle patrol will enhance the steps Destiny USA is already taking to keep shoppers safe. The efforts will serve as another deterrent for retail theft, which continues to impact businesses not just in the mall but throughout the City of Syracuse, according to police.
Violent crime has been well documented in recent years at the mall, including a shot fired by a 14-year-old at a garbage can in February of this year that prompted an evacuation. Another shooting incident was reported outside the mall near the Solar Street entrance in June that injured one man. In March of 2022, Juli Boeheim was robbed at gunpoint by a 12-year-old boy in the parking lot, police said. Two men were arrested for a stabbing at Apex in the mall during the Thanksgiving weekend of 2019.
Authorities are continuing to encourage neighbors and visitors to say something if they see something and to call 911.
