Tampa Police impound lot arrest
TAMPA, Fla. June 8 2019 — Officers arrested three teenagers early Friday morning for attempting to break into the Tampa Police Department’s impound lot.
Authorities say the trio cut the facility’s eastern fence just after 2:00 a.m.
Due to recent attempted break-ins, the department tells ABC Action News it recently upgraded the security at the impound lot, which is located at 100 S. 34th Street. The added security features alerted police to Friday’s burglary attempt.
Police responded to the impound lot with multiple units, including a helicopter and K9 officer Pancho.
The dog tracked the teens, ages 14, 15 and 18, into a wooded area of McKay Bay Park.
Authorities say Pancho bit the 14-year-old on his lower leg. Paramedics transported the teen to Tampa General Hospital for treatement.
Officers apprehended 18-year-old Dequavis Curry and the 15-year-old in McKay Bay Recycling Plant.
Detectives believe the suspects were attempting to steal dirt bikes from the impound lot because they do not require a key to operate.
Police say Curry confessed to the attempted burglary during a post-arrest interview.
All three teens are charged with Possession of Burglary Tools, Criminal Mischief, Trespassing on Property Other Than a Structure, Resisting an Officer Without Violence, Breaking or Injuring Fences, two counts of Burglary of an Occupied Structure.
