Texas man arrested for assaulting security officer over non-smoking rule
Travis County TX Aug 7 2018 A man is accused of punching a security guard after being asked to not smoke inside a sports bar in Pflugerville.
Sammy Cruz-Rodriguez, 27, was charged with one count of assault of a public servant Saturday morning, according to an arrest affidavit.
Cruz-Rodriguez was seen by a security guard smoking inside La Cueva Sports Bar along the I-35 frontage road around 2 a.m., the affidavit said. The guard then asked Cruz-Rodriguez to put out the cigarette. Cruz-Rodriguez got upset, and the guard asked him to leave the club, according to the affidavit.
Cruz-Rodriguez left carrying a beer, which the guard then asked him to not bring outside. Cruz-Rodriguez refused, and when the guard attempted to take the beer from his hand, Cruz-Rodriguez punched him.
A Travis County sheriff’s deputy arrived at the scene and noted Cruz-Rodriguez’s behavior as combative and “highly intoxicated.”
Cruz-Rodriguez was being held at the Travis County Jail on Sunday with bail set at $3,000.
