Thousands of Security Officers Laid Off
Charlotte NC March 20 2020
With businesses shutting down and cities literally closing nationwide, many employees including private security officers are out of work, leaving some without a paycheck.
More than 300 security officers working in the tourism industry in Nashville have no one to protect as restaurants, bars and honky- tonks have been shut down. Hotels have begun laying off staff including security as many reservations have been canceled.
1800 miles west to Las Vegas, the casinos, nightclubs and restaurants have gone dark.
The workers, including security staff, sent home without knowing if they’ll be able to collect a paycheck or when they’ll return to work.
Some 42 million people visited Las Vegas in 2018, for thousands of events ranging from weddings to business meetings as large as the 175,000 visitor Consumer Electronics Show.
Major casino hotel chains like MGM and Wynn had already announced temporary shutdowns
A contract security agency who provides security for many clubs and businesses along Beale Street in Memphis said he’ll have to lay-off most of his employees and that his company may have to close.
Schools that teach private security training courses are also temporarily closing. The “social distancing” recommendations and the possibilities of the virus spreading in a classroom is problematic for a teaching environment Mack Robinson of Premier Security said.
Some security officers may be eligible for unemployment benefits but many others, especially those who sub-contract their services, will not qualify.
