Towson University funds 2 extra officers to patrol downtown overnight
Towson MD Jan 31, 2022 Downtown Towson will be patrolled overnight by two extra county police officers, thanks to grant funding from Towson University.
The funding comes in the wake of recent violence that includes the murder of a student in off-campus housing and a shooting on the university campus.
The university notes that it recently moved three major offices to Washington Avenue, including a 12-story office building it bought in 2019 and the StarTUp at the Armory.
University President Kim Schatzel said in a statement:
Public safety is a priority for TU, our community and business partners, and our elected officials. This broad public-private cooperation is critical to the success and vibrancy of our Towson community.
Towson’s spring term starts Jan. 31. The two additional county officers will patrol the downtown overnight seven days a week.
Towson University says the exact cost of the funding remains uncertain, explaining:
We’re working with the county and with our downtown business and community partners to determine the full scale of the grant. We’re committed to upholding this funding through at the least the end of the spring semester.
Baltimore County Councilman David Marks praised the decision, saying:
The security of downtown Towson is critical as we attract new businesses, residents, and our institutions of higher learning to our county seat. I thank Towson University for its constant engagement and for stepping up to support additional public safety efforts in downtown Towson.
