Trinity County deputies face gunfire during a shutdown of an illegal marijuana grow site
TRINITY COUNTY, Calif. April 18 2020— A Fortuna man was arrested on Monday after Trinity County deputies served a search warrant on an illegal marijuana cultivation site. The suspect faces multiple charges including assault against an officer with a firearm.
On April 13, at 9:30 a.m., deputies with the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) served a search warrant on private property in the area of southern Trinity for an legal marijuana grow site. TCSO says those using the property as a cultivation site were not known to the property’s owner.
While serving the search warrant, deputies found Luis Hernan Cornejo-Becerra, of Fortuna, who immediately fired his rifle at deputies. A deputy returned fire, and Cornejo-Becerra ran into a wooded area.
A California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter then found Cornejo-Becerra near the property and notified deputies of his location. With the information provided, deputies were able to arrest Cornejo-Becerra without further incident.
TCSO says nobody was hurt during the incident. Cornejo-Becerra was booked into the Trinity County Jail for assault against a peace officer with a firearm, obstruct/resist executive officer, illegal possession of a switchblade, possession of methamphetamine, plant/cultivate marijuana.
CHP is currently investigating the officer-involved shooting.
TCSO officials say the deputy who fired his gun remains on paid administrative leave per TCSO’s policy until the investigation is completed.
