TX shoplifter accused of dragging an off-duty officer working security is indicted
WACO, Texas October 27 2019 An alleged shoplifter accused of dragging an off-duty Texas State Technical College police officer through a mall parking lot as he tried to drive off was named in indictments Wednesday charging aggravated robbery (habitual) and aggravated assault on a public servant (habitual)
Andrew Duane Boyd remains in the McLennan County Jail in lieu of bonds totaling $82,000.
Officer Roy Luna was working off-duty as a security guard on Aug. 18 at Waco’s Richland Mall when he attempted to stop a man who had taken about $750 in merchandise from the men’s Dillard’s store
Luna chased the suspect into the parking lot outside the store, where the man got into his car and tried to escape.
Luna used a Taser several times in an attempt to subdue the suspect, who managed to start the car and then dragged the officer as he attempted to drive away, police said.
The suspect didn’t get far, however.
His vehicle struck five cars and Luna ended up trapped with his leg crushed between two of the vehicles, police said.
Luna was able to turn the car off and with the help of bystanders detained the suspect until Waco officers arrived.
He was taken to a local hospital.
Luna has worked as an officer at Texas State Technical College since 2011 after 23 years as a Waco police officer.
He is a certified master peace officer and crime prevention inspector.
