Union High School security officer recognized for saving choking student
UNION, NJ Feb 27 2023– A Union High School security guard was recognized and honored by the Board of Education at Tuesday night’s meeting for saving the life of a choking student last month.
Superintendent Dr. Scott Taylor said Union High School security guard Rich Schubert performed the Heimlich maneuver on a student who had something lodged in his throat. “One of our students was stepping out of the cafeteria, presumably trying to clear his throat because he had something lodged in it, and he was choking and could not breathe,” said Taylor.
Taylor said a videotape, which he shared with the Board, shows Schubert rushing to aid the student, and performing the Heimlich maneuver and dislodging the item from the student’s throat, and “essentially saved that student’s life.”
“This is a very special, humble individual who reflects the special qualities of the important people behind the scenes who we don’t get a chance to honor too often, our security guards,” added Taylor.
