University of Georgia student who accidentally shot himself is arrested
Athens GA October 23 2019
The University of Georgia student who accidentally shot himself in the leg while on campus has been charged with reckless conduct, according to a University of Georgia Police report.
The shooting occurred about 1:55 p.m. Oct. 8 in a student lounge on the fourth floor of the Chemistry Building on Cedar Street, police said.
William Jesse Holder, 21, of Covington was arrested on Oct. 15 and released the same day on a $1,000 bond.
Holder was handling a 9mm pistol when it discharged, police said.
“The investigation produced evidence that the individual involved had unsafely handled the weapon outside the holster, which caused the accident to occur,” according to UGA spokesman Gregory Trevor.
An employee in the building reported the shooting to police and the student was transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to police.
Georgia law allows students to carry guns on campus if they have a permit.
