University security officer shoots man during attack
ST. THOMAS January 13 2019 A security officer on duty at the University of the Virgin Islands fired his weapon injuring a man during an attack and assault.
The man who assaulted the UVI campus security officer on Wednesday was charged with third-degree assault after being released from the Schneider Regional Medical Center, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte has announced.
The man, identified as 55-year-old Glasford Smith, on Wednesday evening at about 6:10 p.m. took a piece of rock and attacked the officer in the back with it.
The assault prompted the officer to fire his weapon, striking Mr. Smith at least once, Mr. Dratte said. Both the campus security officer and Mr. Smith were treated for injuries at the hospital.
Mr. Smith was charged with third-degree assault upon his discharge from the medical facility, and was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing.
