Vero Beach Florida female security officer shot during shooting rampage
VERO BEACH FL Sept 14 2022 — The 60-year-old man accused of shooting a security guard and injuring her boyfriend early Saturday had been the subject of multiple gun-related police calls to his apartment complex where he was found and arrested over the weekend, police said.
The shooting happened around 4 a.m., as the woman was finishing an overnight shift, according to a Vero Beach Police Department report.
Aaron Bishop is accused of shooting at vehicles as they exited the parking garage of the Parc24 building at 445 24th St. in Vero Beach — walking distance from his home.
A bullet struck and broke the left arm of a 22-year-old woman and glass fragments left the 26-year-old man with eye and face injuries following the shooting inside the parking deck, according to police records.
Detectives who examined the two vehicles noted bullet holes in the top portion of a driver side window and the passenger headrest of one vehicle and the driver side mirror of another. A trail of blood led from the car to where the wounded pair waited for police after driving to the parking lot of a shopping center off Indian River Boulevard.
Bishop, of the 500 block of Royal Palm Boulevard, was arrested around 1:30 p.m. Saturday after police and tactical units gathered outside his apartment and instructed him to leave by phone, according to an arrest affidavit.
Bishop appeared in court Monday on two charges each of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, one with great bodily harm, and shooting or throwing a deadly missile. His bail was set at $400,000, records show.
Court filings show Bishop in 2021 was involved in at least two incidents involving the display of a firearm at the complex in the 500 block of Royal Palm Boulevard.
He was never arrested related to the calls, but police records stated in September 2021 residents accused Bishop of showing a gun in his waistband, then in October 2021, it was reported he showed a .9mm handgun inside the apartment laundry room.
Master Police Officer Darrell Rivers said the injured woman was expected to be released from a Fort Pierce hospital either Monday or Tuesday.
Both the man and woman worked as security guards for a Port St. Lucie based Star Security, he said.
“He was (there) to meet her to make sure she got home safe,” Rivers said. “They both were security guards at the building there.”
The woman told police she was finishing her final round of property checks and planned to follow the man who was in another vehicle out of the Kimley-Horn engineering firm Parc24 Office Complex deck on 24th Street, which is less than 150 yards from Bishop’s apartment.
She reported as the two were driving down the deck from the third to second floor, “an unknown white male with a handgun began shooting at both vehicles,” according to reports.
The woman told detectives she was “terrified and ducked her head as they drove by the suspect” and did not get a good look at him. The man in the first vehicle described him to police, saying he was a “white male standing in a shooting stance (who) began shooting at their vehicle(s.)”
Both the woman and man told police they did not know Bishop.
After his arrest, detectives stated Bishop told them he had “been drinking” and taken sleep medication and couldn’t remember the shooting. As police pressed him further, he said he heard noises at the deck and took his gun “to investigate” but claimed he didn’t remember firing.
Detectives who reviewed security footage from the deck and said it “does not match Bishop’s recollection of event.”
“After admitting to shooting at both vehicles, Bishop requested an attorney,” Det. Jennifer Brumley wrote.
