Virginia police officer dies after reportedly being dragged by vehicle
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. January 24 2020 A Virginia police officer is dead after reportedly being dragged by a vehicle during a traffic stop in Newport News.
According to the Newport News Police Department, the officer stopped a vehicle on 16th Street around 6:40 Thursday evening when the driver accelerated, dragging the police officer.
The driver reportedly fled before crashing near the intersection of 16th Street and Walnut Avenue, where he was taken into custody.
The female officer was transported to a local hospital after suffering multiple injuries and was later pronounced dead.
No further information is available at this time. Authorities say a press conference is scheduled to take place Friday at 10 a.m.
