West Alabama man guilty of murder in slaying of club security guard
Wilcox County AL September 2019
A west Alabama man was found guilty Wednesday in the 2017 shooting death of another man in Wilcox County.
The Wilcox County jury deliberated for about two hours before convicting 28-year-old Sylvester Elliot of murder in the slaying of Clifford Bonner, said District Attorney Michael Jackson.
The deadly shooting happened about 1 a.m. on Sept. 3, 2017 at McWilliams Kountry Mart Club.
Bonner was working security at the club that morning when authorities say Elliot and a woman went to the back door with pistols and tried to get in. Bonner told the pair they could not come into the club armed.
Elliot then shot Bonner four times. The victim ran toward the end of the building and Elliot fired four more shots at him. Bonner was taken to J Paul Jones Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead.
Jackson said a sentencing date has not yet been set. Elliot faces a possible sentence of life in prison.
“This was a cold-blooded murder,’’ Jackson said. “This gunslinger needs to spend the rest of his life in prison.”
