West Haven High School security officer injured during fight
WEST HAVEN CT Sept 28 2021— When Gov. Ned Lamont visited West Haven High School Friday to encourage high school seniors to apply for financial aid for college, he said something that rang true to Superintendent of Schools Neil Cavallaro.
“He said we have the most polite kids in the state,” Cavallaro said.
The superintendent didn’t disagree.
Hours after Lamont left, however, a number of police cars arrived at the school after a panic button was triggered by a school resource officer — a police officer assigned to the school — who was breaking up a fight in the school’s cafeteria.
Two angles of video footage of the fight posted to social media, one of which was shared with and reviewed by the Register, show several students swinging at one another with a crowd of students around the perimeter.
Cavallaro said a security guard was injured in the scuffle, but he did not know the extent of the injury.
“We are taking a zero-tolerance stand. We’ve expelled a handful of kids, three to four already for fighting this year, and we have a couple more pending,” he said.
