West Iredell High School student charged with felony threats against school

A West Iredell High School student accused of making a threat of violence has been charged.
On Aug. 13, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release it had petitioned the North Carolina Department of Public Safety’s wing of Juvenile Justice to charge the teen with communicating a false report of mass violence on educational property.
Captain Bill Hamby said the juvenile petitions were signed Thursday and the student was officially charged.
The charge is a felony in North Carolina.
At the time of the news release, Sheriff Darren Campbell said deputies were told of a possible threat of a shooting at the school on Aug. 12. Campbell said a parent reported a student having threatened a school shooting when the Iredell-Statesville Schools students returned to class.
School officials and deputies met with the teen and parent as part of an investigation, Campbell said. Maj. Andy Poteat said the threat appeared to have been made the previous Thursday and Friday.
Campbell said the student told others not to come to school on the date of the threat, and that the youth has a history of similar incidents in the I-SS system.
