Woman commits suicide during SWAT stand-off at Charlotte hospital

After a SWAT standoff, a female who barricaded herself in a vehicle in a parking deck at Carolinas Medical Center committed suicide, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said late Friday.
Police have not released the name and age of the person who fatally shot herself on the fifth floor of the Medical Center Plaza visitor’s parking deck at 1001 Blythe Blvd.
The woman shot herself after speaking with police negotiators, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release. She was pronounced dead the scene, police said.
The hospital is just south of uptown. Police urged everyone to avoid the area during the standoff.
Police drove to the deck at 5:55 p.m after a caller reported someone had been shot, according to the CMPD release.
Police have not said if the person barricaded in the vehicle fired any shots before they arrived, but they reported no one else being hurt.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies also responded to the scene, Observer news partner WBTV reported.
At about 9:30 p.m., police tweeted that “SWAT negotiators are continuing to speak with the subject” but that “the situation is contained.”
Police reported the death in a news release just before 11:30 p.m.
