Woman dies in apparent suicide at Waukesha gun range
WAUKESHA WI July 29 2018 – A woman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a local gun range and store on Wednesday, July 25.
Waukesha police confirmed Thursday that the incident at Fletcher Arms, 1441 Main St., is being treated as an apparent suicide, but the details of what occurred were limited. An employee at Fletcher Arms referred all questions to the owner, who was unavailable late Thursday afternoon.
According to the initial incident report, police were called at about 11:50 a.m. and told a woman had shot herself on the gun range.
Two employees, including one who had went to check on her after noticing on a surveillance camera that she was lying on the ground inside one stall at the range, found the woman unconscious and not breathing moments later.
After police arrived, they spoke with the employees there, who provided some initial information. According to Waukesha police, employees said the 53-year-old woman had purchased some range time and ammunition and rented a gun before she shot herself.
The gunshot wound was to her head, according to police.
From what police heard from the employees, there was no indication by the woman of any intent to harm herself.
“Naturally, to say everyone was in shock as a result of the tragedy goes without saying,” Waukesha Police Capt. Dan Baumann said Thursday.
Fletcher Arms, a longtime Waukesha firearms business, which recently expanded, sells guns and rents its range to qualified customers. It also provides gun safety classes, including those used to complete conceal carry requirements.
