Woman sues company that hired guard who sexually assaulted child in Fort Worth
Tarrant County Texas September 6, 2023 A mother is suing a security company and Greyhound Lines, saying their negligence led to her juvenile child being abducted and raped last spring.
The lawsuit against USA Patrol Division and the bus line was filed Aug. 30, just weeks after a Tarrant County jury found 36-year-old Quincy Neighbors guilty of the aggravated sexual assault of the child. Neighbors, who was employed as an armed security guard at a Fort Worth bus station at the time of the 2022 attack, was sentenced to life in prison.
The lawsuit, which was was filed in Dallas County district court, seeks more than $1 million in damages. The Dallas Morning News is not naming the mother because it generally does not publish information that could reveal the identity of the victim of a sex crime.
USAPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. An attorney for Greyhound could not immediately be reached.
The child was 12 years old, alone and trying to find a bus to Dallas from downtown Fort Worth on April 2, 2022, when she asked Neighbors, then employed by the security company, for help.
Neighbors told the girl he could take her home at the end of his shift and placed her in his vehicle but instead took the child to a park in Fort Worth and sexually assaulted her, the lawsuit says. The child suffered “substantial injuries and life-altering injuries” as a result.
A jury took less than 10 minutes to convict Neighbors last month.
The lawsuit alleges that USAPD’s policies are lacking and that it was negligent in hiring Neighbors, who had two previous convictions for sex crimes involving minors in Louisiana. The company “provided direct access to foreseeable vulnerable unaccompanied minors at the bus terminal” and failed to supervise its guards.
As for Greyhound, the lawsuit says the bus company knows unaccompanied minors will be at its terminals and has rules for their travel, but should take steps to ensure the safety of those children.
