2 dead, including gunman, in shooting at Dallas-area community college
DALLAS TX May 4 2017 — Two people were found dead Wednesday about an hour after a shooting was reported at North Lake College in the Dallas suburb of Irving.
The college was placed on lockdown at 11:43 a.m. CDT, and Irving police later confirmed that shots had been fired at the school.
Irving police spokesman James McLellan said around 12:45 p.m. that officers found two bodies in a building on campus. One of them was presumed to be the shooter, and the incident appeared to be a murder-suicide.
Mr. McLellan had previously described the gunman, based on surveillance footage, as a white man with a brown buzz cut. He was wearing an orange tank top with a gray stripe, carrying a handgun and may have had a black jacket.
A tutor who was leaving her shift told reporters she saw the gunman standing over the victim, who was sitting in a chair, and that he shot her three times.
Police said there did not appear to be a continuing threat at the school, but they were still working to clear the campus.
Those on campus were urged to go to the nearest room and take shelter. Irving police said people should avoid the area.
Mr. McLellan said authorities were working room to room to clear the campus buildings. People were seen walking and running to their vehicles in the school’s parking lots.
Dennis Holmes, an adjunct professor at North Lake College, told KXAS-TV that he had been ordered to barricade himself in the room he was in in the Performance Hall. Later, campus security came to the room and told them to leave.
Some students reported hearing gunshots and seeing officers with rifles walking through the campus.
North Lake College was closed for the rest of the day; all students and staff were told to leave the perimeter of the campus.
Nearby MacArthur High School and Singley Academy also were placed on a precautionary lockdown.
