Roswell man fatally shoots self after threatening mall security, firing at officers
ROSWELL, N.M. January 19 2020 Police say a man fatally shot himself after pointing a gun at mall employees, then shooting at Roswell police officers on Wednesday night.
The Roswell Police Department says around 9:20 p.m., officers responded to the Roswell Mall following a report that a male had pointed a gun at a security guard and two Foot Locker store employees.
RPD reports that the suspect, later identified as 19-year-old Zayne Clayton Carrillo, had shown up to the Foot Locker store asking one of the employees he knew for a ride but was repeatedly turned down.
Police say that as the mall closed, a security guard told Carrillo to leave and started escorting him to a mall exit. Carrillo then reportedly pulled out a handgun, pointed it at the guard and ordered the guard to return to Foot Locker where Carrillo then pointed the gun at store employees through openings in a locked gate that blocks the store’s entrance.
RPD says that when an employee called the police, Carrillo then told the guard to let him out of the mall, which was now closed. As Carrillo left through an exit on the northeast side of the mall, two responding RPD officers arrived in the parking lot and a foot pursuit began.
Authorities say Carrillo reportedly fired multiple shots at the officers as he ran into the Berrendo riverbed, located east of the mall. No officers were struck by the gunfire.
Roswell police say no officers fired their weapons during the incident. As RPD and other law enforcement agencies, including the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office, searched for Carrillo just before 10 p.m., gunfire was heard to the southeast.
RPD reports that a call from dispatch indicated that Carrillo had arrived at his family’s residence located on the 100 block of Tierra Berrenda Drive and had shot himself in the backyard of the residence. He was transported to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.
