Armored Truck Security Officer Dies in Fiery Crash
PHOENIX AZ May 6 2020 One person is dead after an armored truck rolled over and caught fire on SR-143 near the Loop 202 on Monday afternoon.
According to Trooper Kameron Lee with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the vehicle went left off the road into a concrete barrier. The vehicle then continued down an embankment and rolled onto its top in a cement drainage ditch and caught fire.
Video from the Arizona Department of Transportation showed a large plume of black smoke coming from the vehicle while bypassers ran out of their vehicle to try and help.
Lee said the bystanders were able to pull the driver out of the vehicle before it caught fire. The security guard in the rear compartment of the armored vehicle was pronounced dead on scene.
Phoenix firefighters responded to the scene to put out the fire and transported two other victims to the hospital in critical condition.
DPS is investigating what caused the vehicle to veer left off the road. The names of those involved have not been released.
SR-143 was shut down near near L-202 westbound, but the roadway has since reopened.
