Lafayette Louisiana police officer shot to death
LAFAYETTE, La. – Oct 2 2017
Officers say that Moss and Van Buren Streets will reopen to traffic just after 7:00 a.m. The roads were closed early this morning after a police officer was killed in a shooting at a convenience store on the corner of those streets. A suspect has been arrested.
The identities of the officer killed and the suspect, who is currently under arrest, are still being withheld at this time.
2:18 a.m.
A Lafayette police officer is dead after a shooting at a convenience store.
Master Trooper Brooks David with Louisiana State Police says the call came in around 10 p.m. from the store at the corner of Moss Street and Van Buren Drive. David says police received a call of a battery and shots fired. When the officer arrived, the suspect allegedly opened fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Two others were also shot in the incident. David says those victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
According to David, the suspect fled the scene on foot after the shooting. Police caught the suspect a short time later and took him into custody.
Investigators are not yet disclosing the identity of the officer who died or the suspect.
The investigation is active and ongoing. We will bring you more details as they become available.
Lafayette police are on scene of the incident at the intersection of Moss Street and Van Buren Drive.
Witnesses say the shooting occurred outside of a nearby convenience store.
Emergency personnel tell us two individuals have been transported to area hospitals. The extent of injuries is unknown at this time.
