Taunton MASS. police officer dies of Covid-19

Members of the Taunton Police Department came out Tuesday to mourn the loss of one of their own to COVID-19.
Taunton police Patrolman John M. Borges, 48, died Dec. 24 after contracting the coronavirus and becoming ill with COVID-19. According to his obituary on Legacy.com,
Borges was born on the island of Terceira, Azores, Portugal and immigrated with his family to the United States when he was 18 months old. Borges went on to graduate from Taunton High School and work for the Taunton Police Department for more than twenty years.
He served as a search manager for the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Councils Search and Rescue Team (SEMLEC) as well as a lead trainer for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, and was also active with the Civil Air Patrol, the obituary stated.
A funeral Mass for Borges was held Tuesday morning at in St. Mary’s Church in Taunton, and officials across the state posted tributes to Borges on social media. The Duxbury Police Department tweeted: “Our sincere condolences go out to the family and co-workers of @TauntonPolice Officer John Borges….. He was a great person and will be missed by so many. Rest in peace Officer Borges.” The city of Quincy’s Office of Emergency Management also turned to Twitter and praised Borges for his work with SEMLEC and the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. “Saddened to learn of the loss of @TauntonPolice Officer John Borges,” the tweet said. “John was a dedicated, kind gentleman that also enjoyed his work with @SEMLEC_SAR and with @MassEMA as an instructor. He will be deeply missed by many.”
