Brevard County Florida schools begin search for armed security guards
Brevard County FL May 27 2018Â In the wake of the recent wave of school shootings, Brevard County school leaders have begun the search for armed security guards.
The district wants to post them at every public school that doesn’t already have resource officers.
The district wants specialists with 10 years of military or police experience.
Brevard school campuses passed the second day of summer Friday as school administrators are already at work recruiting new security guards.
State law, passed after the Parkland shooting, says they have to have them the guards on duty by the first day of school.
“We of course want to comply with the state mandate, and number two, we want to do everything we can to make sure our students are protected,” Tina Descovich, a school board member said.
The district needs 28 security guards for the schools that don’t already have resource officers.
This week, the school board decided on the desired qualifications.
The school wants every security guard to have 10 years of military or police experience; to have a Florida Department of Law Enforcement certification, and a year as a sergeant or supervisor.
“Obviously, we want the best protection that we can get for our children,” Descovich said.
The new security specialists would have to pass Brevard County Sheriff’s Office physical proficiency standards; pass a background check; and complete a five-week training course, the same one proposed under the discarded plan for undercover marshals.
It’ll cost taxpayers $1.2 million for the new specialists, if they can be found.
District officials acknowledge they may have to accept applicants with lower qualifications.
