ATM security technician fatally shoots robbery suspect
ST LOUIS MO January 8 2020
Two suspects tried to rob a security technician servicing an ATM in North County Tuesday, police said, and one of the suspects was shot during the crime.
According to authorities, three suspects waited in the parking lot of Vantage Credit Union at 601 Greenway Chase Drive near New Halls Ferry for the technician to arrive.
When the security tech showed up around 1:40 p.m. and began working on the machine, the suspects approached him.
It’s unclear what happened next, but the suspects and the security guard ended up exchanging gunfire in the parking lot.
“I thought the ATM security technician acted very quickly,” Lt. Matt O’Neill with St. Louis County police said. “That was very quick thinking on his part. He was actually going to give them the money and he started shooting.”
During the shooting, one suspect was shot and later died in the hospital.
It is unclear how many suspects were firing at the ATM security technician, but after one was shot, the other two fled the scene in a vehicle.
The security guard was unharmed.
A description of the at-large suspects and their vehicle was not given.
The ATM security technician stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, according to police.
At this time, no charges against the security technician is expected to be filed.
