Florida Publix store security guard fatally shoots man trying to enter closed store

A security officer at a South Florida supermarket fatally shot a man who was attempting to enter the store after it closed, authorities said Saturday.
The shooting occurred at a Publix in downtown Hollywood shortly after the supermarket closed at 10 p.m. EDT on Friday, the Miami Herald reported.
Investigators said the man, who knew the security guard, was involved in a physical altercation with the security officer, WPLG-TV reported.
Witnesses told WSVN-TV that an “aggressive man” had tried to enter the store, and that the security officer discharged his weapon, striking the victim.
Investigators confirmed that the security guard was the shooter, according to the television station.
Police officers rendered aid at the scene before fire rescue personnel took the victim to an area hospital, WTVJ reported.
He was pronounced dead at the hospital, a spokesperson for the Hollywood Police Department confirmed to the television station.
A Publix spokesperson told the Herald that because of the pending investigation, the company would not provide additional details. She referred questions to the Hollywood Police Department.
The security officer was not injured and was cooperating with police, WSVN reported.
Police have taken possession of the security guard’s gun, according to the television station.
