Longtime Newark police officer dies from coronavirus
Newark NJ May 12, 2020, A 27-year veteran of the Newark Police Department has died of coronavirus complications, city officials announced Sunday night.
Michael Clegg, a 53-year-old sergeant, died earlier Sunday at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced.
“Our hearts are broken by the news of Sergeant Clegg’s passing,” Ambrose said in a statement. “A 27-year tenure of public service results in strong bonds of brotherhood among fellow police officers. Sergeant Clegg was highly respected by his colleagues and was extremely respectable in his demeanor towards the public. We lost a good man. May he rest in peace.”
Clegg, who joined the department in May 1993, was also a member of the Newark Police Bronze Shields, an African American police officers association. He is survived by his mother, Rosalia Clegg, his sister, Tammy Norman, and had a nephew and four nieces.
Clegg spent was most recently assigned to the 1st Precinct, and had previously served in the 5th and 4th precincts. Clegg leaves behind his mother, Rosalia Clegg, sister Tammy Norman, and was the uncle of one nephew and four nieces.
“The loss of Sergeant Clegg is felt deeply throughout our ranks,” Newark Chief of Police Darnell Henry said. “He was a consistently reliable police officer and was known as an excellent supervisor.”
“We extend our most heartfelt condolences to his family,” Henry said.
