Man attempts to steal alcohol from Safeway, punches security guard trying to stop him
CHICO, Calif. May 5 2020— A man who was attempting to steal alcohol from Safeway punched a security guard who was trying to stop him, police say.
The Chico Police Department says it happened on Friday, May 2, shortly before 10:00 p.m. when officers got a call about a battery that happened at the Safeway on East Avenue.
On the way to the call, police determined that 25-year-old ColinThompson was trying to steal a bottle of liquor from Safeway when he was stopped by store security.
According to police, Thompson shoved the security guard when he was confronted and there was a struggle while the security guard was trying to retrieve the bottle of liquor.
Thompson then punched the security guard and ran out of the store, without the liquor, according to police.
An officer who was responding to the call found Thompson nearby and ordered him to stop.
Police say Thompson refused the officer’s commands and was taken to the ground and detained. Thompson resisted officers by kicking at and spitting on them, according to police.
Thompson was positively identified as the suspect who committed the robbery.
He was arrested for robbery, battery on a peace officer, battery on a security guard, and resisting arrest.
Thompson was transported to the Butte County Jail. His bail was set at $50,000.
