Mask dispute at Fayetteville sports bar prompts fight that ends with security guard shot
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. April 10 2021 — A dispute over wearing masks at a Fayetteville sports bar Thursday night ended with a security guard being critically wounded.
A small group of people tried to get inside Phat Daddy’s Sports Bar and Grill, at 3406 Raeford Road, shortly after 11 p.m. without wearing masks, according to bar owner Kenneth Clark.
They got into a dispute with Phat Daddy’s staff and other patrons who were wearing masks and left.
“Some of the parties involved got into some sort of altercation with some other customers,” Clark said.
“As security guards tried to get the guys to leave, you could hear one of the other guys say, ‘Go to the car.’ The guy went to the car and retrieved a weapon.”
Security camera footage obtained by WRAL News shows the masked patrons followed the other group into the parking lot, where scuffles ensued and people in both camps drew guns.
Charles Jackson Jr. and other security guards tried to break up the fight, and a man from the unmasked group fired two shots, wounding Jackson, security camera footage shows.
“They dispersed, and then you see Mr. Jackson slide off to the side by himself, and then someone from behind allegedly fired a weapon and hit him,” Clark said.
The suspected shooter can be seen walking, gun in hand, to a Mercedes SUV, getting in and driving off. Others from both groups also drove away after the shooting.
Clark said Jackson, 50, was shot in the head and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, He was transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon, where he was in critical condition.
Clark said doctors told him the bullet missed Jackson’s brain but that they had to work to stop substantial bleeding.
“Chuck was more than a security guard to me. He was like my brother,” Clark said. “[He was] retired military, a Marine, [and] just cared about people. [He was] a God-fearing man, loved his family {and] loved the people he worked with. So, when something happens to a good guy like that, it’s weighing heavy on my heart.”
