NYPD officer commits suicide at Queen’s home
Queens NY Jan 28 2019
An off-duty cop who shot himself in the head inside his Queens home has died, police said Saturday.
The officer, identified by sources as Nicholas Mencaroni, 40, died shortly after he was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital Friday, authorities said.
Medics were called to his 69th Lane home in Middle Village — a dead-end street near Juniper Blvd. — about 2:30 p.m.
Mencaroni’s girlfriend, another cop, found him on the floor mortally wounded and called 911, screaming into the phone that he killed himself, sources with knowledge of the case said.
It was not immediately disclosed if he left a note or an explanation as to why he shot himself.
Mencaroni joined the force in 2004 and initially worked in Queens, police said.
He is the first NYPD cop to take his life this year.
Nearly a half-dozen officers committed suicide last year, prompting Commissioner James O’Neill to record a YouTube video describing the services available to cops in distress.
“Your job requires that you spend your day helping others. But before you can take care of anyone else, you must first take care of yourself, so please, remember, if you need it, help is here, and help is available,” O’Neill said.
The NYPD offers a variety of programs, and in 2014 launched an “Are You OK?” campaign aimed at promoting mental health awareness.
The department also works with Police Organization Providing Peer Assistance — known as POPPA — a volunteer support network for officers and retirees that offers help for post traumatic stress disorder, marital problems, substance abuse and suicide prevention.
