Police: Man dies in backseat of rideshare on UMD campus
COLLEGE PARK, Md. Jan 7 2021 No foul play is suspected after a man died in the back of a rideshare vehicle on the University of Maryland grounds, according to campus police.
This happened early Friday morning near Ehrensberger Drive, which is near the UMGC/Marriott parking garage
Officers said the rideshare driver picked up the victim, an adult man, from a place off-campus. The driver told authorities the victim “appeared to be intoxicated.”
During the drive, the man got sick, and the driver pulled over to clean the seat. That’s when authorities say the man climbed to the driver’s seat. The driver told the man to get in the back, which he did.
The driver “then heard a single gunshot and observed the decedent slumped over,” the department said.
There were no signs of a struggle between the driver and the man, authorities said. Neither are associated with the university.
The exact cause of death is pending, the department said.
