Sam’s Jewelry Store robbery suspects assaulted security officer-now arrested
SAN LEANDRO, CA Aug 13 2018 — Two Oakland men have been arrested on suspicion of assault and robbery in connection with a jewelry store heist that happened last month at Bayfair Center, San Leandro police said Friday. Steven Glenn, 35, and Randy Hawkins, 41, both confessed to the robbery at Sam’s Jewelry Store, police said in a news release.
The robbery occurred about 6:30 p.m. July 24, when the suspects entered the store and began inquiring about the “expensive” jewelry line, police said.
They then left, but returned a short time later. One suspect reportedly stood outside while the other entered, wearing gloves, and began smashing glass display cases and stealing the valuables inside, according to police.
An estimated $14,000 in jewelry was taken, police said.
When the suspects fled the store, a mall security officer confronted them. Police said the officer was injured in the face when the one of the suspects threw the hammer used in the crime at him.
The suspects then reportedly went to the parking lot and fled in a car. A partial license plate of their vehicle was recorded and given to police.
Detectives obtained video footage from the store cameras, and images of the suspects were shared with other law enforcement agencies in the area. Within a few days, a tip was received with possible identities for the suspects.
Glenn was arrested on Wednesday, as the suspect who used the hammer to rob the store and assault the security officer, police said. Hawkins was arrested Thursday, and the vehicle used in the crime was also located.
