San Diego bar security guard who shot patron sent to prison
SAN DIEGO CA Nov 17 2019 A security guard at a Little Italy bar who shot a customer after being punched in the face was sentenced Friday to six years in state prison.
Dangelo Jeffrey, 24, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and firearms allegations including carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, Deputy District Attorney Mary Naoom said.
She argued for the maximum 6-year prison term after the 23-year-old victim, Kyle Gouvia, told the judge how being shot killed his dream of playing professional basketball. The 6-foot 8-inch tall man said the bullet hit his spine, liver and intestines. He now teaches high school basketball.
Jeffrey’s lawyer asked San Diego Superior Court Judge to place his client on probation, noting the former security guard had no criminal history. Judge Polly Shamoon chose the upper prison term.
San Diego police said Jeffrey got into an argument with patrons of the popular El Camino bar on India Street. He reportedly made some vague threats to the customers. They left the bar about 2 a.m. on April 20 and Jeffrey followed them down the street, where the argument resumed.
Gouvia punched Jeffrey in the face and was shot, police said. Jeffrey went home after the shooting but then called police to surrender.
