James City County VA Dec 30 2020
The Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail tested all its staff members and inmates for the coronavirus last week.
The results? 78 inmates and seven staff members are positive for the virus.
“All 78 inmates who tested positive are currently asymptomatic, this is in addition to the single inmate who tested positive for COVID-19 last week,” according to the VPRJ’s Facebook post on Dec. 24.
On Dec. 22, VPRJ announced in a news release they would test all the jail’s inmates and staff for the coronavirus after an inmate and an unknown number of staff members tested positive the week before.
Around 450 tests were administered by the Virginia Army National Guard and the Virginia Department of Health.
“VPRJ remains in contact with the Virginia Department of Health’s (VDH) epidemiologist, as well as our local Peninsula Health District and our on-site medical staff,” according to VPRJ’s news release. “VPRJ remains committed to the health and safety of our inmate population and will provide updates as appropriate.”
