Woman arrested after shoplifting and attempting to pepper spray security
Anchorage AK July 11 2019
A woman is in jail after shoplifting and deploying pepper spray at a department store, a release from the Anchorage Police Department says.
Fred Meyer security officers at the Debarr Road location told police they saw 33-year-old Jana Miller shoplifting several items.
According to the police, security followed Miller out of the store. They then confronted Miller about the items and security says she was immediately uncooperative and grabbed a can of pepper spray, which was attached to her purse.
As Miller pointed the spray at one of the security officers, police say he was able to grab and push down her arm, causing the pepper spray to deploy on the ground.
“Although the spray did not hit anyone, the [effects] were still felt by security,” the release states. “At that time they were able to handcuff Miller and take her into their office while waiting for APD to arrive.”
APD says Miller was remanded to the Anchorage jail. She faces two charges of first-degree robbery, two counts of third-degree assault, second-degree criminal trespassing and third-degree theft.
Police say Miller is on probation for a previous charge for misconduct involving a weapon. APD contacted Miller’s probation officer who confirmed Miller’s actions at Fred Meyer were in violation of her probation.
The probation officer will be forwarding separate criminal charges, according to the release.
