Woman threatened to shoot staff at Middlesex Hospital after claiming nurse was ‘checking out’ her husband
Middletown CT October 31 2019
A Middletown woman threatened to open fire on the Middlesex Hospital emergency department early Saturday morning after she insisted a female nurse was “checking out” her husband.
Karen Brooks, 38, admitted to officers a few minutes later that she was drunk before she was arrested and charged with threatening and disorderly conduct, according to a Middletown police report.
Officers were called to the hospital just after 12 a.m. Saturday and found a “very emotional” Brooks leaving the emergency department with a man.
Brooks had come to the emergency room for some kind of care, which is not specified in the police report, but admitted to officers that she became irate when a female nurse looked at her husband in a way that made her upset, according to the police report.
During her explanation, officers smelled the “distinct odor of alcohol” on her breath and noticed that she struggled to maintain her balance.
The nurse told officers Brooks had put a hand in her face and told her, “You don’t know who I am, I’m gonna get you,” while closing her hand as if she was holding a gun, according to the report.
When the hospital security officer tried to escort her out of the emergency department lobby, Brooks began threatening staff.
“Brooks specifically yelled to staff members that she was going to ‘shoot this place up,’ which made everyone on scene very uncomfortable,” according to the police report.
After an hour outside the hospital, Brooks was arrested and charged. She was released that morning on $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Nov. 4 in Superior Court in Middletown.
