Norfolk security guard, 3 others charged with murder

Pete Cain died during a payback robbery in Ocean View over some stolen shoes and a purse, prosecutors said Monday.
Cain, 24, was shot dead near his apartment in the 9000 block of 1st View St. on May 23 trying to break up a plot to rob his next-door neighbors. Five people have been charged with second-degree murder in connection with his death.
One of them, 22-year-old David William Barrington, went to court Monday to ask for a bond. His lawyer, Tom Reed, said his client repeatedly told detectives he didn’t know the people he was hanging out with planned to commit a robbery or even that they had a handgun.
Barrington thought he was taking Kevin Demetrius Hill, 22, to drop off something at his friend’s house, Reed said.
Prosecutor Catherine Dodson said Barrington told detectives he knew full well the group was planning to rob people at gunpoint and agreed to be the getaway driver.
District Judge Clark Daugherty denied Barrington a bond, sending him back to the Norfolk jail.
But, Dodson said, it was Ashanta Parker and Felicia Ries who targeted Cain’s next-door neighbors, who they said had stolen shoes and a purse from them.
“The women went to get even,” she said.
So one of the women went up to case the apartment and let the others know there were four people inside, Dodson said. Then Hill pulled his hoodie over his head, covered his face with a makeshift mask and went upstairs with a handgun.
Cain, armed with his own gun, told the residents to let him answer the door. When he did, Hill shot him. Cain’s younger brother, Jonathan, said his brother was shot in the stomach, and the bullet hit vital organs.
Hill bolted back to the car, Barrington’s mother’s Dodge Avenger, and Barrington drove off, afraid Hill would shoot him or his 17-year-old brother, Russel, Reed said.
After he was arrested, Barrington helped detectives find the bushes where Hill tossed the handgun, Reed told Daugherty. He also led them to the bandanna Hill used to hide his face.
Barrington was working as a security guard at an Oceanfront hotel when he was arrested, he added. He went to Ocean Lakes High School before he got in trouble for stealing his dad’s prescription drugs.
But, Reed said, Barrington rallied and earned his GED through the Commonwealth’s ChalleNGe Youth Academy, a quasi-military program for 16- to 18-year-olds.
Reed also introduced Barrington’s parents, a 24-year Navy veteran and a stay-at-home mom, to the judge, along with his girlfriend, a manager at McDonald’s.
Dodson countered that, even though Barrington comes from a fine family, it didn’t stop him from agreeing to rob people at gunpoint and murder someone.
