Off-duty Roselle police officer fatally shoots self after Matawan car crash
MATAWAN NJ Jan 21 2020 — An off-duty Roselle police officer fatally shot himself Sunday after crashing his car on Broad Street in Matawan, according to Christopher Swendeman, spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
The man, whose name was not released, is a 39-year-old Aberdeen resident, Swendeman said.
He appeared to have lost control of his car about 12 p.m. near 208 Broad St., struck two parked cars and then partially rolled his vehicle, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
“As first responders left the vehicle to get equipment to help with the extraction, the driver located a firearm and fatally shot himself in the head,” Swendeman said in an email to the Press.
