School security officers rush in to aid officer under attack
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Jan 18 2020 — The police officer showed up at the scene of a car crash to help, but she needed help after one of the drivers attacked her, witness cellphone video showed.
Marcelas Terrell Jones, 29, was arrested and accused of assaulting the Fort Lauderdale officer, Thursday afternoon, at 2225 NW 19th St., near Atlantic Technical College west of Interstate 95 and north of Sunrise Boulevard, WSVN-Ch. 7 reported.
Jones is facing charges that include aggravated battery on an officer, resisting arrest with violence, and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, court records show.
The cellphone video obtained by the station doesn’t show the crash but it does show Jones trying to leave the area. When the officer goes to stop him, the video appears to show the 6-foot-tall, 160 pound man punching the officer once but missing with a second swing.
Atlantic Technical College security officers then rushed in to assist the officer.
The video shows Jones assuming a boxer’s stance to continue the fight. The officer deploys her stun gun but it fails to stop him and he pushes the officer up against a fence as two security guards are seen coming to her aid.
Backup officers arrived and Jones was taken to the Broward County Jail.
Police did not identify the officer but said that she was not seriously hurt and was expected to fully recover.
