Teen charged with threatening city schools

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with making an online threat targeting Charlottesville City Schools.
In a 10 p.m. news release, the police department said there is no active threat and schools will be open Wednesday.
The department learned of the threat Tuesday afternoon. The juvenile was later arrested and charged with threatening to commit serious bodily harm to persons on school property, a Class 6 felony.
A police spokesman declined to describe the nature of the threat.
“Individuals who threaten the safety and security of our students, staff and faculty will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Chief RaShall Brackney said in a statement. “The safety of our community, particularly our school community, is not negotiable, and the Charlottesville Police Department will utilize every resource available to address and negate that threat.”
Police said the 14-year-old is still being detained, but did not say where.
The threat comes two months after an Albemarle County teenager, Joao Pedro Souza Ribeiro, threatened to commit an ethnic cleansing through a shooting at Charlottesville High School. City schools were closed two days.
That same week, another Albemarle teen made a threat referencing Albemarle High School. The teen was charged with one felony count of making threats to a school. County schools remained open despite the threat.
